About This Project

To a dry stone wall builder, a steep slope is a blank canvas. This West Seattle residence was no exception. We reoriented existing boulders and added 15 tons of rock to create three distinct terraces, with a natural stone stairway to access each one.

As a walkable terraced garden, each capstone must remain sturdy no matter how hard they’re stomped on. The sheer weight and expert placement of each stone ensures this, while maintaining a natural aesthetic. Without hillside stabilization, surrounding properties see the effects of erosion as soil spills out onto the sidewalk. This home stands proud, as do the new plants lining the terraces.
